Another labourer on Thursday fell prey to a deadly accident at Karachi Port, the operator of which, Karachi port Trust (KPT), is yet to take appropriate measures for the safety of port workers. This was not a single accident, which occurred due to negligence of the concerned authorities, a large number of wage earners have lost their valuable lives during operation at deadly port berths.

Amazingly, the law enforcers have not arrested a single criminal, who was found guilty during the investigation process and closed the files by asking the responsible persons to compensate the families of victims. It was the story of Iqbal Din son of Ahmed Din, an instructor of a small wage earners group worked at KPT on commission basis, had lost his precious life when he fell asleep at port berth no. 21 during a gap between two shifts.

His colleagues told Business Recorder, the victim was guarding them whole night, but they awoke to found him taking last breaths under heavily loaded goods trailer. They said the victim was shifted to Civil Hospital Karachi (CHK).

"It could not be ascertained that when this trailer no. TKP-193 reached at the berth and when their colleague fell victim to the sad accident," the group members maintained. "Iqbal Bhai had warned us not to sleep on the way to pass a night, but when he has fallen asleep, it is beyond us," the wage earners said.

Ghulam Ahmed son of Muhammad Hussain, uncle of the victim said Iqbal arrived in the metropolis in 1994 to support his family. The deceased was the resident of Deh Hawaili Rakhan, Tehsil Depalpur, District Okara and was currently residing in the slums of Machar Colony. He was married but was living alone in Karachi for a long time.

Iqbal left behind 12 family members to mourn his death. He had four children. Rana Zulfiqar, the contractor has assured to compensate the bereaved family. However, Jackson police on complaint of deceased's uncle Ghulam Ahmed have registered a FIR no. 116/2010 under section 320 of the Pakistan Panel Code (PPC) against unknown culprits and have started further investigations.
